The abacus is the most ancient calculating device known in the world. Usually, an abacus contains a wooden frame, rods, and beads. Each rod represents a different place value – ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on. Each bead represents a number (mostly 1 or 5), and can be moved along the rods. The Chinese abacus was developed about 5000 years ago. The first Chinese abacus was invented around 500 B.C. The abacus, as we know it today, was used in China around 1300 A.D. It is known as the fifth great invention in Chinese history and was officially listed as an intangible cultural heritage at the 8th Annual UNESCO World Heritage Congress.
According to the document, the first abacus was introduced to Japan from China in the 16th century. After studying the tool for 400 years, Japan has improved and revolutionized the soroban (算盤, そろばん, counting tray) to what we use today. A soroban is made up of a wooden frame divided into two parts separated by a beam, with upper deck of one row of beads and a lower deck of four rows of beads. Simultaneously, the abacus has also been introduced and become popular in Korea, India, America, and other Southern Asia countries including Malaysia.
